Traditional African Clothing

The world is changing on a very high speed scale. Every since a black man was elected as leader of the free world, there has been quite a tremendous interest in African fashions globally. Generally, clothes are considered to be a way of expressing of who we are.

A majority of traditional African clothing wearers celebrate their African heritage through a variety of African clothing styles. The variety of African clothes is considered to be an ethnic way that employs both versatility and diversity to prove unto others who the people are and what they are about.

Africa is a huge continent with over a billion people that have very different backgrounds and cultures. So the clothing from different regions of the continent of Africa shows the different cultures and diversity that the African people have.

The most common traditional African clothing include the: Dashiki: These African clothes are made from colorful unique garments such as tunica that cover the upper part of the body. The dashikis are most adorned by West African men. Dashikis are adorned in both formal and informal occasions. All Africans of various religions (Christian, Muslim and Indigenous traditional religions) all adorn Dashikis.

The best way to adorn a Dashiki is by matching it with drawstring pants. Many bridegrooms love adorning these garments for their wedding ceremonies.

Boubou: This is traditional African clothing that is worn with matching pants alongside along robe that cover the outfit. This is a common piece of garment that is commonly worn by Muslims, and by many Africans in Francophone countries. And in the western world these garments are popularly worn during Kwanzaa celebrations.

A kufi is a traditional form fitting West African hat that is adorned by older men and they are worn to represent status of a wise and respected leader in their community.

As the rest of the world is busy getting fashion trends from designers, African men set the trends themselves by adorning clothing that signify their rich culture. West Africans are the ones who mostly adorn African attire that sets the trend worldwide.

Ceremonial dresses of the Nigerians and Senegalese people adorn full garment clothes that are made of quality fabrics. The fabrics are made from pure and very high quality cotton that never shrinks even after washing.

Plenty of African designers have taken the cultural garments and turned them into quality fashionable clothes that can be worn for everyday use. The clothing are at times made long for specific functions such as weddings, funerals, birthday celebrations and baptism.

Other designers are incorporating traditional African clothing attires and blending them with western attires such as a long linen top that can be worn with shorts and sandals for people planning on an afternoon on the beach.

During summer, these long dresses are worn with only a pair of boxers inside for they pass for formal and informal occasions and the wearer is left feeling comfortable because of the free air getting in and out.

A majority of African women who still wear traditional clothing prefer adorning long flowing linen dresses. These dresses are styled in ways that they fit the wearer perfectly allowing them a chance to flaunt their figures and sense of style. The children are not left behind too for you will find long flowing garments that make up clothes for them and they come out looking sharp in African attire!
